Practice/Meet Schedule

Welcome to the St. Leonard Cross Country team!  The coaching staff hopes to make this season fun, exciting, and to show improvement in distance running as the season progresses.  The rules for participation are listed below.  Please read these rules carefully with your parents then sign and return the parent permission form as well as the Archdiocesan Waiver.

Practices:

·        Practices will begin at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  All athletes will be ready to be picked up by 5:15 pm.  Please attend all practices as distance running requires proper training.

·        All practices will be held outside.  Practice will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain or lightning.

·        Please dress appropriately for practice. Please wear clothes that will allow for cooling.

·        In the event that an athlete’s shoes get wet at a practice, please take the time to dry them by placing crumpled newspapers inside so they will be dry for the next day’s practice.

·        Athletes should bring their own water bottle to practice.

·        Practice will begin and end on the school playground.

·        Practice will be conducted at Janura Park (our home course), Proksa Park, and Freedom Park. Cross Country races are run on grass and dirt trails so the athletes need to acclimate themselves to that type of surface.

Competition:

  • A Cross Country competition is called a “meet” not a game.  Our meets will be mostly with the Suburban Parochial League (SPL) in which we are the school that is furthest east as all of the schools are from the western suburbs.
  • Athletes compete in 1 race per meet – a race from 1 to 2 miles. Although this race may only take from 6 to 18 minutes it will be exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

6th Grade

  • Please tell your coach the Wednesday prior to the Saturday meet whether or not you will be able to compete in the meet.

Volunteer Coaches:

We could use a few parents to help facilitate getting to Janura, Proksa, or Freedom Parks.  If you would be interested please contact Ed Forst.

Let’s have a great season!
