Baptism
The first three sacraments are Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. They are called the “Sacraments of Initiation”. We are reborn in Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. Holy Baptism is the basis for all Christian life, the gateway to the life in the Spirit. It is also the door which gives access to all other sacraments. Without Baptism we cannot receive any other sacrament.
Through Baptism:
Congratulations! You are taking an extremely important step in your family's spiritual life. Baptism is necessary for salvation. Our Lord Jesus Christ instituted Baptism as the means of removing original sin from our souls, of being born again and incorporated into His Mystical Body, and of becoming members of His Church. There is nothing else more important for you right now than to ensure that your child is baptized.
What Are the Requirements
for Infant Baptisms?
1. Infant baptism is for children from birth until generally their 6th birthday.
2. All children who are baptized must have at least one Godparent.
3. The parents must intend to raise the child in the Catholic Faith.
4. Infants must be generally baptized in the parish that at least one of their parents attends. For members from a different Church, a permission letter from your pastor may be needed.
5. The child's birth certificate should be available for presentation to the parish.
6. The parents' marriage certificate should be presented to the parish. However, even for parents married outside of the Church, Baptism is not to be denied to the infant. If you are currently married outside of the Church, this is an ideal time to have your marriage blessed to rectify this. The process is rather simple. Contact us to learn more about how to do this.
7. Each parent must also attend a Baptism Class.
What Are the Requirements to Serve As A Godparent?
1. Must also attend a Baptism Class.
2. Must be above 16 years.
3. Practicing Catholic
4. Who attends Sunday Mass
5. Takes their faith seriously
6. Confess their sins frequently
7. Have received all of their sacraments of initiation, i.e., Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
8. If they are married or living together, they should be married in the Catholic Church.
9. If they're not married, they should live separately and set an example of the Catholic Faith.
The role of a Godparent is to be a living example of the Catholic faith well lived.
Church law requires one Godparent, but you can have two. If two, it is encouraged that one be male and the other female.
PROCESS:
• Come to Mass, get to know and talk to the priest
• Attend the Baptism Class
• Reserve Baptism day after the Class
Baptismal Classes
English Session: Takes place the second Wednesday of every month at 7 pm.
Spanish Session: Takes place the third Wednesday of every month at 7pm.
When you're ready to pick a date to attend, contact the parish officer (708-484-0015) to add you to the list! The Class takes place at the St. Leonard Site in Berwyn, IL.
Documents needed to fill out the intake form after you complete the baptism class:
- The birth certificate of your child
- The confirmation certificate of the Godparent (if they're single)
- The marriage certificate from the Catholic Church (if they're married)
Fee
There is no fixed fee for the baptism. Families and godparents are invited to make a donation that they feel is appropriate based on their means. Donations can be submitted when you attend the baptism class. We accept all major forms of payment. We thank you for your generosity.

- we become members of the Church and are made sharers in her mission
- we share in the Royal Priesthood of Christ (common priesthood of the faithful)
